With a population of almost 130,000+ citizens, Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in the state of Iowa. It is playfully known as “The City of Five Seasons,” which refers to a fictional fifth season set aside for enjoying the other four. Since the city spans the Cedar River, it is no wonder Cedar Rapids is a major intersection of trade for the cities of Chicago, Milwaukee, and Kansas City. It is the largest grain processing city in the world and home to several Fortune 500 companies.
Cedar Rapids was originally inhabited by the Fox and Sac Native American tribes. It wasn’t until 1838 that Osgood Shepherd arrived in the area and became the first official settler. The town was established later the same year, only then was it given the handle “Columbus.” In 1841 the town was resurveyed and given the name “Cedar Rapids” because of the rapids in that portion of the Cedar River against which the town was placed.
The first economic boom for Cedar Rapids came in 1871 with the establishment of the Sinclair Meatpacking Company. Soon thereafter, Quaker Oats was founded and became the world’s largest cereal mill. Following these industrial developments were culture and art expansions. These included the founding of Greene’s Opera House and the Cedar Rapids Business College. A much-lauded painter and native of Cedar Rapids, Grant Wood, expatriated to France for a short time and returned in 1930 whereupon his most famous painting, “American Gothic,” was well-received for its unrelenting realism.
The telecommunications industry helped push the city through The Great Depression when Arthur Collins started the Collins Radio Company. With a modest staff of eight, this little company became a beacon of the industrial radio business. During World War II, Collins Radio supplied equipment to the armed services. In 1973, the company became part of Rockwell Collins.
